Sickle cell anemia is a disease where individuals inherit abnormally shaped red blood cells. Instead of normal, round red blood cells, these blood cells are sickle-shaped. Due to their abnormal shape, these sickle cells can cause blockages in blood flow which can result in extreme pain and even organ damage. Furthermore, these cells do not last as long as normal red blood cells therefore causing anemia.
